I cannot rave enough about this course . Very user-friendly, fun, easy to follow and completely logical. At the time I found Grammar Lion, I had been through two other comprehensive grammar courses. What I liked about this course in comparison to other grammar courses I have taken is that it not only goes over grammar content, but it also goes over learning tips for how to learn grammar effectively. The emphasis is on developing a working knowledge of grammar instead of memorizing a lot of obscure grammar rules. The course also encourages students to research things they don’t know or are unsure about as they work through the course.
The structure of the course is a good balance between depth and approachability. A lot of grammar courses seem daunting just based on how much material and how many rules grammar can have, but this is one of the better paced grammar courses I have seen. The lessons are written in a very concise, easy to understand way, and it never tries to overload students with too much material at one time. You can go quickly through the main lessons if you just want quick a grammar refresher, or you can spend more time working through the linked reference material to get a more comprehensive and nuanced understanding of grammar.
In addition, while you can go through the course completely independently, I found Ellen to be an excellent resource. I think I learned just as much if not more from her than from the course alone. Most other online grammar courses are independent, self-paced courses where you just read through written material or watch videos, but if you’re someone who needs to talk to a live person to understand something, this is the course for you. I’ve found it’s really rare in online courses to find an instructor who gives the same level of support as I found in Grammar Lion. Ellen really gives the course a personal touch that is lacking in a lot of online courses.
Overall, I found Grammar Lion to be an excellent course and a welcome addition to all the other online grammar courses available on the Internet. I recommend it both as a good basic English grammar course for novice students and as a supplement course for more advanced English grammar students.
I completed this comprehensive course and enjoyed the open communication with Ellen all along the way. My goal was to review the scope of grammar to evaluate my ability to proceed with proofreading as a new career path. The organization of the website, course material resources, and evident expertise of Ellen made this an extremely enjoyable experience. I always thought I was pretty good at grammar. But, at age 70, I took Ellen’s course and was amazed at how much I forgot or didn’t even know. Grammar Lion is a very challenging, yet fun course. The course is broken up into bite-sized portions that make it easy to use and learn from her lessons. I enjoyed this course immensely, which is saying something for a subject that is so seemingly dry as grammar. I highly recommend Grammar Lion for anyone needing, or simply desiring, to improve their knowledge of English grammar.
